Lijiang Old Town, Yunnan, Southwestern China

A crowd listens to street musicians in Lijiang Old Town. Behind them is the oldest and largest bridge in the ancient town - the Big Stone Bridge or Da Shi Qiao. The bridge is close to where Mongolian Emperor Kublai Khan stationed military garrisons in 1253. The two-arched bridge is 500 years old, built during the Ming dynasty. It joins the east and west of the old town. Lijiang has also been influenced by the East and West, with enduring traces of Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam found in and around the popular tourist destination. The street musicians are local Naxi as well as Tibetan - the audience are from all over China and all over the globe. ~ keithalyons@gmail.com
